Statistics is fundamental to medical research. Statistical methodology drives sampling techniques, study design, methods for monitoring, data analysis, and the interpretation and reporting of results. As a consequence, statisticians are vital partners in NIHR sponsored research, ensuring that research is of the highest quality.

NIHR statisticians are funded by NIHR research units such as the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), Research Support Service (RSS), Applied Research and Collaboration (ARC), Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) or by an NIHR research grant.

These statisticians are spread geographically across the UK. Many statisticians are responsible for collaborating across a diverse range of clinical and methodological research areas which can be challenging.

The NIHR Statistics Group was formed to support NIHR statisticians, share expertise, facilitate communication and collaboration. Our remit is to ensure that the most appropriate methods are brought into practice, and that methodological research is targeted to applied research needs.

To achieve this, we provide opportunities for professional development & networking for applied statisticians. We also create networks for statisticians, clinicians, scientists and patients to collaborate throughout health and social care.

The NIHR Coordinating Centre has used the NIHR Statistics Group as an exemplar of collaborative working between the different NIHR infrastructure organisations.
