There are a number of ways that you can contribute to the Group’s activities:
Sign up to the mailing list
If you’d like to be kept updated about our future conferences, events and initiatives, these are advertised via our mailing list.
Contribute to our annual conference
At the conference there are lots of opportunities to get involved, from organising or presenting during breakout sessions, acting as a facilitator, presenting a poster and rapid-fire talk, or signing up to be a mentor or mentee.
Join the conference organising committee
Working in pairs, members of the organising committee take responsibility for different aspects of conference organisation, such as the breakout sessions, posters and talks, and plenary speaker arrangements. The committee jointly decide on the theme of the conference, make decisions on logistical matters, and draft the programme.
Join a Working Group committee
If you are interested in joining one of our Working Group committees, please email nihrstatisticsgroup@leeds.ac.uk. Committee members plan and organise workshops, meetings and webinars throughout the year, and contribute breakout sessions and posters at the annual conference. They also produce publications on methodological issues in their subject areas, often collaborating with researchers from other disciplines across the NIHR.
Suggest an event or a new Working Group
The Group is run by its members, for its members. If you are aware of a particular methodological challenge in health and care research that is not covered by our existing Working Groups and events, please get in touch. We can give you support to organise a preliminary event to gauge interest and decide whether there is scope to create a new working group. We can also support you in organising one-off events.
Please supply three named contacts and an outline of the purpose and objectives of the event. If there proves to be scope for a new Working Group, we can provide an outline proposal for you to complete. The steering committee will discuss the proposal and, if approved, the new group will be initiated.
STAT-LINK
Linking independent statisticians and investigators of clinical trials
Identifying independent statisticians to be part of a Trial Steering Committee (TSC) or Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) is often challenging. It is useful for statisticians to be involved in these roles to facilitate their professional development.
A separate mailing list called STAT-LINK has been created to link statisticians and investigators of clinical trials to fulfil these roles. JISC provides these email discussion lists for the UK Education and Research communities.

When advertising a request for a statistician to take a position on a DMC or TSC it is useful to include:
- CV request
- Brief summary of the trial
- Source of trial funding
- Duration of trial
- Anticipated frequency of meetings (specify whether face-to-face or teleconference)
- Clarification for reimbursement of travel expenses
