Understanding instrumental variables and data visualisation in social care research
NIHR SSCR Social Care Statistics Webinar
NIHR SSCR’s Webinar Series showcases the School’s commissioned research and capacity-building activities. The Series also aims to showcase relevant social care research funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
A recording of this event is available.
The Webinar involved two presentations:
Instrumental variables estimation
Dr Courtney Van Houtven, Professor, Department of Population Health Science, Duke University School of Medicine and Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy
Courtney presented on making causal inferences in social care research using instrumental variables – a method used when to help unpick underlying causal associations when key measures are inter-correlated. Slides for the instrumental variable presentation.pdf are available.
Plotting poetry: beyond a grammar of graphics
Sam Rickman, Research Officer in Data Science and the Care System, Care Policy and Evaluation Centre (CPEC), London School of Economics and Political Science
Sam presented on techniques of data visualisation commonly used in social care research. This presentation was interactive and there are instructions on how to recreate it on this GitHub page.
